David Yurman
LEARN FROM THE BEST IN THE BUSINESS
The phrase, “hard times will make you stronger” may sound cliché, although, designer jeweler, David Yurman could tell you this from personal experience.
Growing up in a family that taught success is never handed to you, David Yurman started his dreams of being successful at a young age. During high school, David’s older sister invited him to Providence town with her. David said, “she was working with a sculptor and artist that was quite good and fairly well known. He taught me how to weld and I took that back to high school with me and continued with the passion of welding in my garage.” David’s passion continued as he began to sell his designs. He said, “I started selling hands and learned how to make hand signs for every letter of the alphabet. People would buy multiples for their initials and I would sell them for ten bucks each…that was a deal then.”
From the beginning, David knew his parents would give him no choice but to do a good job on any task he was given, even when it came to doing his chores. “I was from a family where it was important to work…my family would always remind me life isn’t a free meal and your not here to collect allowance in our house without contributing. I had to take out the garbage, mow the lawn, change the screens, and then deliver newspapers to bring a certain amount of actual money into the family for common use. My parent’s would say if you live here then this is part of the deal, if you want to find a way to get extra money, you need to find it yourself, said David.”
